While King Pasenadi was at the Buddha’s monastery, some nude ascetics walked
close by. King Pasenadi paid respect to them and said “Namaste, you revered
ascetics”. Then, the King told the Buddha that they were arhats.
The Buddha then warned the King, “Your Majesty, as a layman involved with
sensuality, how could you tell who is an arhat?”
To tell who adheres to precepts, you must stay with that person for a long period.
To tell who has clean behaviors, you may look at their works.
To tell one’s wisdom, you shall have a conversation with them.
To tell one’s mental strength, you shall see when they are in danger.”

The Buddha said,“you shall not look down upon following four objects.”
1) Do not look down upon a young king.
2) Do not look down upon a small snake.
3) Do not look down upon little fire.
4) Do not look down a young monk.
You should not look down on them. Though a king is still young, he is powerful
and could sentence you to death.
Though a snake is small, it can bite men to death.
A little fire can burn houses and kill people.
Those who harm a virtuous young monk would receive horrible outcomes. Their
children, wives, and assets would be catastrophic.
After the Buddha’s speech, King Pasenadi said that the Buddha’s teaching was so clear. Then, the King vowed to become a disciple of the Buddha, His teaching, and
the monks. From then on, the King always adhered to the Buddhist principles.
