พระโพธิสัตว์เกิดเป็นพญาปลาช่อน (มัจฉชาดก)

มัจฉชาดก
พระบรมศาสดา เมื่อประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวันมหาวิหาร ทรงปรารภฝนที่พระองค์ทรงบันดาลให้ตกลง ตรัสพระธรรมเทศนานี้ มีคำเริ่มต้นว่า อภิตฺถนย ปชฺชุนฺนา ดังนี้
ในสมัยหนึ่ง ในแคว้นโกศล ฝนไม่ตกเลย ข้าวกล้าทั้งหลายเหี่ยวแห้ง ตระพังสระโบกขรณีและสระในที่นั้นๆ ก็เหือดแห้ง แม้โบกขรณีเชตวัน ณ ที่ใกล้ซุ้มพระทวารเชตวัน ก็ขาดน้ำ ฝูงกาและนกเป็นต้นรุมกันเอาจะงอยปาก อันเทียบได้กับปากคีม จิกทึ้งฝูงปลาและเต่าอันหลบคุดเข้าสู่เปือกตม ออกมากินทั้งๆ ที่กำลังดิ้นอยู่.
พระศาสดาทอดพระเนตรเห็นความพินาศของฝูงปลาและเต่า พระมหากรุณาเตือนพระทัยให้ทรงอุตสาหะ จึงทรงพระดำริว่า วันนี้ เราควรจะให้ฝนตก.
ครั้นราตรีสว่างแล้ว ทรงกระทำการปฏิบัติพระสรีระเสร็จ ทรงกำหนดเวลาภิกษาจาร มีพระภิกษุสงฆ์หมู่ใหญ่แวดล้อม เสด็จเข้าไปบิณฑบาตในพระนครสาวัตถี ด้วยพระพุทธลีลา ภายหลังภัตรเสด็จกลับจากบิณฑบาตแล้ว เมื่อเสด็จจากพระนครสาวัตถีสู่พระวิหาร ประทับยืนที่บันไดโบกขรณีเชตวัน ตรัสเรียกพระอานนทเถรเจ้ามาว่า
ดูก่อนอานนท์ เธอจงเอาผ้าอาบน้ำมา เราจักสรงน้ำในสระโบกขรณีเชตวัน.
พระอานนทเถรเจ้ากราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ น้ำในโบกขรณีเชตวันแห้งขอด เหลือแต่เพียงเปือกตมเท่านั้น มิใช่หรือพระเจ้าข้า?
ตรัสว่า อานนท์ ธรรมดาว่า กำลังของพระพุทธเจ้าใหญ่หลวงนัก เธอจงนำเอาผ้าอาบน้ำมาเถิด.
พระเถรเจ้าได้นำมาทูลถวาย พระศาสดาทรงนุ่งผ้าอุทกสาฎกด้วยชายข้างหนึ่ง อีกชายหนึ่งทรงคลุมพระสรีระ ประทับยืนที่บันได ตั้งพระทัยว่า เราจักสรงน้ำในสระโบกขรณีเชตวัน.
ทันใดนั้นเอง บัณฑุกัมพลศิลาอาสน์ของท้าวสักกะ ก็สำแดงอาการร้อน ท้าวเธอรำพึงว่า อะไรเล่าหนอ ทรงทราบเหตุนั้น จึงมีเทวบัญชาเรียกวลาหกเทวราชเจ้าแห่งฝนมาเฝ้า พลางตรัสว่า พ่อเทพบุตร พระบรมศาสดาทรงตั้งพระทัยว่า เราจักสรงน้ำในสระโบกขรณีเชตวัน ประทับยืนอยู่ ณ บันได เธอจงกระทำแคว้นโกศลทั้งสิ้นให้มีเมฆพะยับพะโยมเป็นอันเดียวกัน บันดาลให้ฝนตกโดยเร็วเถิด.
วลาหกเทวราชรับเทวบัญชาแล้ว นุ่งก้อนเมฆก้อนหนึ่ง ห่มก้อนหนึ่ง ขับเพลงเมฆสังคีตบ่ายหน้าไปทางโลกธาตุด้านตะวันออก เหาะไปแล้ว ณ ทิศาภาคตะวันออก ก็ปรากฏกลุ่มเมฆกลุ่มหนึ่ง มีขนาดเท่าลานนวดข้าว ซ้อนเป็นชั้นๆ ตั้งร้อยชั้นพันชั้น คำรนคำราม ฟ้าแลบแปลบปลาบ ฝนก็ตกลงมา ด้วยอาการประหนึ่งว่า คว่ำหม้อเทลงมา แคว้นโกศลทั้งสิ้นท่วมท้น เหมือนห้วงน้ำไหลบ่าท่วมอยู่ ฝนตกอยู่ไม่ขาดสาย ครู่เดียวเท่านั้นก็เต็มสระโบกขรณีเชตวัน น้ำท่วมจดถึงแคร่บันได.
พระบรมศาสดาลงสรงในสระโบกขรณีเชตวันแล้ว ทรงครองผ้าสองชั้นสีแดงคาดรัดประคด ทรงครองสุคตจีวรเฉวียงพระอังสา แวดล้อมด้วยภิกษุสงฆ์เสด็จพระดำเนินไป ประทับนั่งเหนือพระบวรพุทธาอาสน์ที่ปูลาดไว้ในบริเวณพระคันธกุฎี เมื่อภิกษุสงฆ์แสดงวัตรปฏิบัติแล้ว ก็เสด็จอุฏฐาการ ประทับยืน ณ พื้นขั้นบันไดแก้วมณี ประทานโอวาทแก่ภิกษุสงฆ์ แล้วทรงส่งกลับไป เสด็จเข้าสู่พระคันธกุฎีที่มีกลิ่นจรุงใจ ทรงบรรทมสีหไสยา ด้วยพระปรัศว์เบื้องขวา.
ต่อเวลาเย็น พวกภิกษุประชุมกันในธรรมสภา ยกเรื่องขึ้นสนทนากันว่า ดูก่อนท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ท่านทั้งหลายจงดูพระคุณสมบัติ คือขันติ พระเมตตาและพระกรุณาของพระทศพล ในเมื่อข้าวกล้าต่างๆ กำลังเหี่ยวแห้ง ชลาลัยทุกแห่งก็เหือดหาย ฝูงปลาและเต่าประสบทุกข์ใหญ่หลวง พระองค์ทรงอาศัยพระกรุณา ทรงครองผ้าอุทกสาฎกด้วยมุ่งพระทัยจักให้มหาชนพ้นจากความทุกข์ ประทับยืน ณ บันไดขั้นแรกแห่งโบกขรณีเชตวัน ทรงบันดาลให้ฝนตก เหมือนห้วงน้ำใหญ่ไหลบ่าท่วมโกศลรัฐทุกส่วน โดยเวลาเพียงครู่เดียว ทรงปลดเปลื้องมหาชนจากทุกข์กาย ทุกข์ใจ แล้วเสด็จเข้าพระวิหาร.
พระศาสดาเสด็จออกจากพระคันธกุฎี เสด็จมาสู่ธรรมสภา ตรัสถามว่า ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอนั่งประชุม สนทนากันด้วยเรื่องอะไร? ครั้นภิกษุทั้งหลายกราบทูลให้ทรงทราบแล้ว ตรัสว่า ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย มิใช่แต่ในบัดนี้เท่านั้น ที่ตถาคตทำให้ฝนตก ในเมื่อมหาชนพากันลำบาก แม้ในกาลก่อน เมื่อตถาคตเกิดในกำเนิดสัตว์เดรัจฉาน แม้ในคราวเป็นราชาของฝูงปลา ก็ได้ทำให้ฝนตกแล้วเหมือนกัน แล้วทรงนำเรื่องในอดีตมาสาธก ดังต่อไปนี้
ในอดีตกาล มีลำห้วยแห่งหนึ่งล้อมรอบด้วยชัฏแห่งเถาวัลย์ อยู่ตรงโบกขรณีเชตวันนี้ ณ เมืองสาวัตถี แคว้นโกศลนี้แหละ ครั้งนั้นพระโพธิสัตว์บังเกิดในกำเนิดปลา มีฝูงปลาเป็นบริวารอยู่ในลำห้วยนั้น แม้ในคราวนั้น แคว้นโกศลรัฐนั้นฝนก็ไม่ตกเหมือนคราวนี้ ข้าวกล้าของพวกมนุษย์เหี่ยวแห้ง ในบึงเป็นต้นขาดน้ำ ฝูงปลาและเต่าพากันคุดเข้าเปือกตม. แม้ที่ลำห้วยนั้น ฝูงปลาก็พากันคุดเข้าโคลนตม ซุกซ่อนในที่นั้นๆ ฝูงกาเป็นต้นก็พากันรุมจิกทึ้งออกมาจิกกินด้วยจะงอยปาก.
พระโพธิสัตว์เห็นความพินาศของหมู่ญาติ ก็ดำริว่า ผู้อื่นเว้นเราเสียแล้ว ใครเล่าที่จะได้ชื่อว่าสามารถปลดเปลื้องทุกข์ของพวกปลาเหล่านี้ เป็นไม่มี เราจักทำสัจจกิริยาให้ฝนตก ปลดเปลื้องฝูงญาติจากทุกข์ คือความตายให้จงได้ แล้วแหวกตมสีดำออก พญาปลาใหญ่สีกายเหมือนปุ่มต้นอัญชัน ลืมตาทั้งคู่ อันเปรียบได้กับแก้วมณีสีแดงที่เจียรนัยแล้ว มองดูอากาศ บันลือเสียงกล่าวแก่เทวราชปัชชุนนะว่า ข้าแต่พระปัชชุนนะผู้เจริญ ข้าพเจ้าอาศัยกับหมู่ญาติที่กำลังเดือดร้อนมาก ในเมื่อข้าพเจ้าผู้ทรงศีลลำบากอยู่ ทำไมท่านไม่ช่วยให้ฝนตกลงมาเล่า ข้าพเจ้าบังเกิดในฐานะที่จะกัดกินพวกเดียวกันได้ แต่ก็ยังไม่เคยได้ชื่อว่ากัดกินมัจฉาชาติ แม้แต่ปลาเล็กที่จะมีขนาดเท่าเมล็ดข้าวสาร ถึงสัตว์มีปราณอื่นๆ เล่า ข้าพเจ้าก็มิได้เคยแกล้งปลงชีวิตเลย ด้วยสัจจวาจานี้ ขอท่านจงให้ฝนตกลงมา ปลดเปลื้องหมู่ญาติของข้าพเจ้าจากทุกข์ด้วยเทอญ
เมื่อจะเรียกเทวราชปัชชุนนะ ประหนึ่งสั่งงานคนรับใช้ กล่าวคาถานี้ ความว่า :-
“ข้าแต่พระปัชชุนนะ ท่านจงคำรนคำรามให้หมู่สัตว์น้ำทั้งหลาย ซึ่งเป็นอาหารของกา ได้มีชีวิตรอดจากการทำลายของฝูงกาด้วยเถิด และจงปลดเปลื้องข้าพเจ้าจากความโศกเถิด ที่ต้องมาเห็นหมู่ญาติสัตว์น้ำทั้งหลาย ต้องมาตายเพราะภัยแล้ง” ดังนี้.
พระโพธิสัตว์เรียกท้าวปัชชุนนะ เหมือนสั่งบังคับคนรับใช้อย่างนี้ ทำให้ฝนห่าใหญ่ตกทั่วแคว้นโกศล ให้มหาชนพ้นจากมรณทุกข์ ชนและหมู่สัตว์ทั้งหลายสามารถดำรงชีวิตอยู่ได้สืบไป
พระบรมศาสดาจึงตรัสว่า ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย มิใช่แต่ในบัดนี้เท่านั้นที่ตถาคตยังฝนให้ตก แม้ในกาลก่อน ถึงเกิดในกำเนิดปลา ก็ให้ฝนตกแล้วเหมือนกัน ดังนี้
ครั้นทรงนำพระธรรมเทศนานี้มาแล้ว ทรงสืบอนุสนธิ ประชุมชาดกว่า
ฝูงปลาในครั้งนั้น ได้มาเป็นพุทธบริษัท
ปัชชุนนะเทวราชได้มาเป็น พระอานนท์
ส่วนพญาปลาได้มาเป็น เราตถาคต ฉะนี้แล.
ลูกรัก
สัจจะ และความจริงใจ
คือ เครื่องเสริมสร้างบุคลิกภาพ และความสำเร็จ

The Bodhisattva was born as a king of snakehead fish.

Maccha Jataka
While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha told a story about the rain he caused to fall, beginning with the Abhitthanaya Pajjunna verses, as follows:
Once upon a time, there was a drought in the Kosala City. Rice seedlings withered. The ponds of the Bokkharani Lake were dry. Even the Bokkharani Lake near the gate of the Jetavana Monastery did not have any water. Flocks of crows and other birds used their beaks, which were like pincers, to pinch the struggling fish and turtles hiding in the mud and bring them out to eat.
Witnessing the catastrophe of the fish and turtles, the Buddha’s heart was moved with compassion. He thought, “Today, I should make it rain.” When the dawn came, after attending to his bodily needs, he waited till it was the proper hour to go round in quest of alms, and then, girt round by a host of the monks, and with the Buddha’s grace, he went into the Sāvatthi City for alms.
On his way back to the monastery from his round for alms in the Sāvatthi City, the Buddha stood on the steps of the Jetavana’s Buddha image hall and addressed the Venerable Ananda, “Ananda, bring me a bathing cloth, I will bathe in the Jetavana pond.”
Venerable Ananda replied, “Venerable sir, the water in the pond has dried up, leaving only mud, hasn’t it?”
“A Buddha’s power is great, Ananda. Go, bring me the bathing dress.,” said the Buddha.
Venerable Ananda brought it to him. The Buddha used one end of the udakasādaka robe to round his waist and covered his body with the other. He stood on the steps and thought: I will bathe in the Jetavana pond.
The yellow-stone throne of Sakka, the King of Deities, suddenly grew hot and he sought to discover the cause. Realizing the cause, he summoned Valahaka, the Lord of Rain, and said: “The Buddha is standing on the steps of the tank of Jetavana, and wishes to bathe. Please hastily pour down rain over the kingdom of Kosala.”
Following Sakka’s command, Valahaka, the Lord of Rain, put on a cloud, covered himself with another cloud, and chanted the rain song, he flew layered in hundreds or thousands of layers. They roared and thundered. Rain fell as if a pot had been overturned. The whole of the Kosala City was overflowing like a flooded river. The rain fell continuously. In a short while, the Jetavana pond was full and water reached the stairs.
After his bath, the Buddha put on two layers of red cloth as a sash and a robe around him to leave one shoulder bare. Surrounded by monks, the Buddha sat down on the Buddha’s seat. After the monks had finished their duties, the Buddha rose and stood on the crystal-stone steps. The Buddha gave a sermon to the monks and sent them away. Then, the Buddha entered the perfumed chamber and stretched himself, lion-like, upon his right side.
In the evening, the monks gathered in the Dhamma Hall and discussed the matter, “Venerable sirs, see the qualities of patience, kindness, and compassion of the Buddha. When rice seedlings were withering, all the watercourses were drying up, and fish and turtles were suffering immensely, the Buddha put on the robe of the water-dropping garb, intending to free people from suffering. Standing on the first step of the stairs of the Jetavana tank, he caused rain to fall like a torrent of water overflowing and covering all parts of the Kosala Kingdom. In a moment, he relieved the people from physical and mental suffering. Then, he entered the temple.
The Buddha came out of his chamber and went into the Dhamma Hall. The Buddha asked, “Monks, what are you talking about?” When the monks told him, he said, “Monks, it is not only now that I make rainfall when people are suffering. In the past, when I was the king of fish, I also made rain fall. Then, he told the story of the past as follows:
In the past, in the Savatthi City of the Kosala Kingdom, there was a pond where the tank of Jetavana now is – a pond fenced in by a tangle of climbing plants. At that time, the Bodhisatta was born as a fish and had a school of fish as his followers in that stream. Even then, in the Kosala Kingdom, there was no rain as it is now. Rice seedlings withered. Ponds run out of water. Schools of fish and turtles dug into the mud. Even in that stream, the fish dug into the mire and hid there. Crows pecked them and pulled them out to swallow them with their beaks.
The Bodhisatta saw the calamity of his relatives and thought: Nobody except me can relieve the suffering of these fish. I will make a truthful act to make rain fall and relieve my relatives from the suffering of death. Then, it parted the black mud. The great fish, whose body was the color of the buds of the Clitoria ternatea tree, opened both eyes resembling cut red gems and looked at the air. It said to the god Pachunna: “Venerable Pachunna, I live with my relatives, who are in great distress. Since I, who follow the precepts, am in distress, why don’t you send rain? I was born in a position to eat my species, but I have never eaten fish. Even small fish the size of a rice grain and other living beings, I have never intentionally killed any of them. With these truthful words, may you send rain to relieve my relatives from suffering?”
The Buddha called out to God Pachunna like he ordered a servant to do something.
He recited this verse: “Venerable Pachunna, roar so that the aquatic animals, which are the food of the crows, may they survive the destruction of the flocks of crows, and relieve me from the sorrow of having to see my aquatic relatives die because of drought.”
The Bodhisatta called out to the great king Pachunna as if ordering a servant, causing torrential rain to fall throughout the Kosala Kingdom, freeing people from the misery of death, and allowing people and animals to continue to live.
The Buddha said, “Monks, it is not only now that I caused rain to fall, but in the past, even when born as a fish, I also caused rain to fall.”
After delivering this sermon, he concluded the story:
The school of fish at that time became the Buddhist community.
Pachunna Deva became Venerable Ananda.
The king of fish became me, the Buddha.
My dearest children
Veracity and sincerity are means to build up character and success.
