พระโพธิสัตว์เกิดเป็นลิง

สุงสุมารชาดก
พระศาสดา ครั้งเมื่อทรงประทับอยู่ ณ พระเวฬุวันมหาวิหาร ทรงปรารภพระเทวทัตพยายามปลงพระชนม์พระองค์ ตรัสพระธรรมเทศนานี้ มีคำเริ่มต้นว่า อลเมเตหิ อมฺเพหิ ดังนี้
ครั้งนั้นพระศาสดาทรงสดับว่า พระเทวทัตพยายามจะฆ่าพระองค์ จึงตรัสว่า ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย เทวทัตพยายามจะฆ่าเรามิใช่ในบัดนี้เท่านั้น แม้เมื่อกาลก่อนก็พยายามที่จักฆ่าเราเหมือนกัน แต่ก็ไม่สามารถฆ่าได้ อย่าว่าจะฆ่าเลยแม้เพียงให้เราหวาดสะดุ้งก็ทำมิได้ แล้วทรงนำเรื่องอดีตมาตรัสเล่า.
ในอดีตกาล ครั้งพระเจ้าพรหมทัตเสวยราชสมบัติอยู่ในกรุงพาราณสี พระโพธิสัตว์บังเกิดในกำเนิดวานร ในหิมวันตประเทศ มีกำลังดุจช้างสาร สมบูรณ์ด้วยเรี่ยวแรง ร่างกายใหญ่ มีความงามพร้อม อาศัยอยู่ที่ราวป่าตรงคุ้งแม่น้ำ.
กาลนั้น จระเข้ตัวหนึ่งอาศัยอยู่ในแม่น้ำคงคา ภรรยาของจระเข้เห็นร่างกายพระโพธิสัตว์ แล้วเกิดแพ้ท้องอยากกินเนื้อหัวใจของพระโพธิสัตว์ จึงบอกจระเข้สามีว่า ผัวจ๋า น้องอยากกินเนื้อหัวใจของพญาลิงนั้น.
ผัวบอกว่า น้องจ๋า เราเป็นสัตว์เที่ยวไปในน้ำ ลิงเป็นสัตว์เที่ยวไปบนบก เราจะจับลิงนั้นได้อย่างไรเล่า.
เมียบอกว่า พี่จระเข้ต้องหาอุบายจับมาให้ได้ หากจับมาไม่ได้ น้องขอย่อมตาย.
ผัวปลอบว่า อย่าคิดมากไปเลยน้อง พี่มีอุบายอย่างหนึ่ง พี่จะให้น้องกินหัวใจพญาวานรนั้นให้จงได้ จึงเข้าไปหาพระโพธิสัตว์ในเวลาที่พระโพธิสัตว์ดื่มน้ำในแม่น้ำคงคา แล้วนั่งพัก ณ ฝั่งคงคา จระเข้นั้นจึงกล่าวอย่างนี้ว่า
ท่านพญาวานร ท่านเดี๋ยว กินผลกล้วยในถิ่นนี้ เที่ยวไปในที่ที่เคยไปอย่างเดียวเท่านั้นหรือ ที่ฝั่งคงคาฟากโน้นมีผลไม้อร่อย เป็นต้นว่า มะม่วงและชมพู่ ตกดาษดื่นไม่รู้จักวาย ท่านไม่คิดไปเคี้ยวกินผลาผล ที่ฝั่งโน้นบ้างหรือ.
พญาวานรตอบว่า ท่านพญากุมภีล์ แม่น้ำคงคามีน้ำมาก ทั้งกว้างใหญ่ ข้าพเจ้าจะข้ามไปได้อย่างไรเล่า.
จระเข้กล่าวว่า หากท่านจะไป ข้าพเจ้าจะให้ท่านขึ้นหลังเราไป พญาวานรเชื่อจึงยอมตกลง.
เมื่อจระเข้กล่าวว่า ถ้าเช่นนั้น ท่านจงมาขึ้นหลังเรา พญาวานรจึงขึ้นหลังจระเข้ จระเข้พาไปได้หน่อยหนึ่งก็ดำน้ำจมลง.
พระโพธิสัตว์กล่าวว่า สหายท่านแกล้งทำให้เราจมน้ำ นี่เรื่องอะไรกัน.
จระเข้ตอบว่า เรามิได้พาท่านไปจริงๆ ดอก แต่เมียของเราเกิดแพ้ท้อง อยากกินหัวใจท่าน เราประสงค์จะให้เมียของเรากินหัวใจท่านต่างหาก.
พญาวานรได้สดับดังนั้นจึงกล่าวด้วยสติปัญญาว่า สหายที่ท่านบอกมาก็ดีแล้ว หากหัวใจอยู่แต่ในท้องของเรา เมื่อเรากระโดดไปตามยอดไม้ หัวใจก็จะพึงแหลกลาญหมด.
จระเข้ถามว่า เช่นนั้นแล้วท่านเอาหัวใจไปไว้ที่ไหนเล่า.
พระโพธิสัตว์ชี้ให้ดูต้นมะเดื่อต้นหนึ่งไม่ไกลนัก มีผลสุกเป็นพวงแล้วกล่าวว่า ท่านจงดูหัวใจของข้าพเจ้าแขวนไว้ที่ต้นมะเดื่อนั่น.
จระเข้กล่าวว่า หากท่านให้หัวใจแก่ข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าจะไม่ฆ่าท่าน.
พญาวานรกล่าวว่า ถ้าเช่นนั้น ท่านจงนำเราไปที่นั่นเถิด เราจะให้หัวใจที่แขวนอยู่บนต้นมะเดื่อแก่ท่าน.
จระเข้จึงพาพญาวานรไป ณ ที่นั้น. พระโพธิสัตว์จึงกระโดดจากหลังจระเข้ไปนั่งบนต้นมะเดื่อ กล่าวว่า สหายจระเข้หน้าโง่อย่างเจ้าเข้าใจว่า ธรรมดาหัวใจของสัตว์ทั้งหลายเหล่านี้อยู่บนยอดไม้กระนั้นหรือ เจ้าเป็นสัตว์ที่โง่เขลาเสียจริง เราจึงลวงเจ้าได้เช่นนี้ไง ผลาผลของเจ้าก็จงเป็นของเจ้าเถิด เจ้าก็ใหญ่แต่ตัวเท่านั้น แต่หามีปัญญาไม่.
เมื่อจะประกาศเนื้อความนี้ ได้กล่าวคาถานี้ว่า :-
เราไม่ต้องการด้วยผลมะม่วง ผลชมพู่ และขนุนทั้งหลายที่ท่านบอกเราว่า อยู่ฝั่งสมุทร ผลมะเดื่อของเราต้นนี้ดีกว่ามูลผลาหารที่ท่านบรรยายมา
ร่างกายของท่านใหญ่โตก็จริง แต่ปัญญาไม่สมกับร่างกายเลย ดูก่อนจระเข้ เจ้าถูกเราลวงเสียแล้ว บัดนี้เจ้าจงไปตามทางของเจ้าเถิด.
จระเข้เป็นทุกข์ เสียใจ ซบเซา ดุจดังบุรุษทรงพลังมาจับพาดลงกับพื้นทั้งเจ็บทั่วทั้งร่างกายและใจ ได้กลับไปที่อยู่ของตนตามเดิม.
พระศาสดาทรงนำพระธรรมเทศนานี้มาแล้ว ทรงประชุมชาดก.
จระเข้ในครั้งนั้น ได้เป็น เทวทัต ในครั้งนี้
นางจระเข้ได้เป็น นางจิญจมาณวิกา
ส่วนพญาวานร คือ เราตถาคต นี้แล.
พระชาดกเรื่องนี้ดูจะตรงกับผู้คนในสังคมสมัยนี้ที่ใช้ผลประโยชน์มาล่อหลอกกัน

Bodhisattva was born as a monkey.

Sungsumara Jataka
The Buddha, when he was staying at Veluvana monastery, told a story about Devadatta’s attempt to kill him by preaching this sermon, starting with
“Alametehi ambehi”.
The Buddha heard that Devadatta had tried to kill him and said, “Monks, Devadatta is trying to kill me not only now. In the past, he also tried to kill me, but he could not. Let alone killing me, he could not even make me tremble.” Then, the Buddha related a story from the past.
In the past, when King Brahmadatta reigned in Benares City, the Bodhisatta was born as a monkey in the Himalayas. It grew up as strong and sturdy as an elephant. It had great strength and a large, beautiful body. He lived in a forest haunt on a river curve.
At that time, there was a crocodile dwelling in the Ganges River. The Crocodile’s mate saw the great body of the monkey Bodhisatta and conceived a longing to eat the monkey’s heart. So, it said to its crocodile husband, “Honey, I want to eat the heart of that monkey king.”
The husband said, “Honey, we live in the water, and monkeys live on land. How can we catch that monkey?”
The wife said, “My love, you must find a way to catch it. Otherwise, I shall die.”
The husband consoled her, “Don’t worry too much, dear. I have a plan. I will give you that monkey’s heart.”
When the Bodhisatta came to drink water on the bank of the Ganges, the crocodile drew near and said:
“Lord Monkey King, why do you eat bananas only in this old familiar area?
On the other side of the Ganges River, delicious fruits such as mangoes and rose apples kept falling abundantly without ceasing. Don’t you think of getting some fruits on the other side of the river?”
The monkey king replied, “Lord Crocodile, the Ganges River is deep and wide. How can I cross it?”
The crocodile said, “If you want to go, I will let you ride on my back.” The monkey king trusted him and agreed.
When the crocodile said, “Come and ride on my back.” The monkey king got on the crocodile’s back. The crocodile carried him for a short distance before diving down and sinking.
The Bodhisatta said, “My friend, you are trying to drown me.” Why are you doing this?
The crocodile replied, “I did not take you. My wife is suffering from morning sickness and wants to eat your heart. I want my wife to eat your heart.”
The monkey king heard this and said with wisdom, “Friend, it is nice of you to tell me. If my heart were in my stomach, when I jumped from treetop to treetop, my heart would be knocked to pieces.”
The crocodile asked, “Well, where do you keep it?”
The Bodhisatta pointed to a fig tree with ripe fruits and said, “My heart is hanging on that fig tree.”
The crocodile said, “If you give me your heart, I will not kill you.”
The monkey king said, “Then, take me to the tree. I will give you the heart hanging on that fig tree.”
The crocodile brought the monkey to the tree. The Bodhisatta jumped from the crocodile’s back and sat on a fig tree, saying, “Oh, silly crocodile, do you think animals keep their hearts on the treetops? You are a fool. So, I have outwitted you. Your fruits shall be yours. Your body is big, but you have no wisdom.” And then to explain this idea, he uttered the following stanzas:
“I don’t want any mangoes, rose apples, and jackfruits on the seashore you told me. My fig is good enough for me.
Great is your body, but how much smaller is your wit?
Crocodile, you have been deceived by me. Now go your way.”
The crocodile felt sad and miserable like a powerful man had thrown it to the ground. Both its body and mind ached. It then returned to its dwelling place.
The Buddha, having delivered this sermon, summoned the Jataka tale.
The crocodile at that time was Devadatta.
The crocodile’s mate became Lady Cincamanavika.
The monkey king became me, the Buddha.
This Jataka story seems relevant to people today who use benefits to lure and deceive others.
