พระโพธิสัตว์เกิดเป็นพญาเหี้ย

โคธชาดก
พระศาสดาเมื่อประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเวฬุวัน ทรงปรารภภิกษุผู้คบหากับภิกษุผู้เป็นฝ่ายผิดรูปหนึ่ง ตรัสพระธรรมเทศนานี้ มีคำเริ่มต้นว่า น ปาปชนสํเสวี ดังนี้.
ในอดีตกาล ครั้งพระเจ้าพรหมทัตเสวยราชสมบัติอยู่ในพระนครพาราณสี พระโพธิสัตว์ถือปฏิสนธิในกำเนิดเหี้ย ครั้นเติบใหญ่แล้ว มีเหี้ยหลายร้อยเป็นบริวาร พำนักอยู่ในโพรงใหญ่ใกล้ฝั่งแม่น้ำ บุตรของพระโพธิสัตว์นั้น ชื่อว่าโคธปิลลิกะ ทำความสนิทสนมเป็นเพื่อนเกลอกันกับกิ้งก่า (ป่อมข่าง) ตัวหนึ่ง เย้าหยอกกันกับมัน กอดรัดฟัดเหวี่ยงกัน ขึ้นทับมันไว้ด้วยคิดว่า เราจักกอดกิ้งก่านี้เป็นสหาย
ฝูงเหี้ยพากันบอกความสนิทสนมระหว่างโคธปิลลิกะกับกิ้งก่านั้น ให้พญาเหี้ยทราบ. พญาเหี้ยจึงเรียกบุตรมาหา กล่าวว่า ลูกเอ๋ย เจ้าทำความสนิทสนมกันในที่ไม่บังควรเลย ธรรมดากิ้งก่าทั้งหลาย มีกำเนิดต่ำ ไม่ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับมัน ถ้าเจ้าขืนทำความสนิทสนมกับมัน สกุลเหี้ยแม้ทั้งหมด จักต้องพินาศเพราะมันเป็นเหตุแน่นอน ต่อแต่นี้ไป เจ้าอย่าได้ทำความสนิทสนมกับมันเลย.
โคธปิลลิกะก็คงยังทำอยู่เช่นนั้น แม้ถึงพระโพธิสัตว์จะพูดอยู่บ่อยๆ ก็ไม่สามารถจะห้ามความสนิทสนมระหว่างเขากับกิ้งก่าได้ จึงดำริว่า เหี้ยทั้งฝูงนี้คงต้องพินาศเพราะกิ้งก่าตัวนี้เป็นแน่ เราควรจัดเตรียมทางหนีไว้ ในเมื่อภัยนั้นบังเกิด แล้วให้ทำปล่องลมในรูที่อยู่ ซ่อนเอาไว้ในพุ่มไม้แห่งหนึ่ง ไม่ไกลจากรูที่อาศัยของตน
ฝ่ายบุตรของพญาเหี้ยนั้นก็มีร่างกายใหญ่โตขึ้นโดยลำดับ ส่วนกิ้งก่าคงตัวเท่าเดิม โคธปิลลิกะคิดว่าจักสวมกอดกิ้งก่า (เวลาใด) ก็โถมทับอยู่เรื่อยๆ (เวลานั้น) เวลาที่โคธปิลลิกะโถมทับกิ้งก่า เป็นเหมือนเวลาที่ถูกยอดเขาทับฉะนั้น
เมื่อกิ้งก่าได้รับความลำบาก จึงคิดว่า ถ้าเหี้ยตัวนี้กอดเราอย่างนี้สักสอง-สามวันติดต่อกัน เราคงต้องตายแน่ เราจักร่วมมือกับพรานคนหนึ่ง ล้างตระกูลเหี้ยนี้เสียให้จงได้.
ครั้นวันหนึ่งในฤดูแล้ง เมื่อฝนตกแล้ว ฝูงแมลงเม่าพากันบินออกจากจอมปลวก ฝูงเหี้ยพากันออกจากที่อาศัยนั้นๆ พากันไปกินฝูงแมลงเม่า
พรานเหี้ยผู้หนึ่งถือจอบเข้าไปในป่ากับฝูงหมา เพื่อขุดโพรงเหี้ย กิ้งก่าเห็นเขาแล้ว คิดว่า วันนี้ความหวังของเราสำเร็จแน่ ดังนี้แล้วจึงเข้าไปหาพราน หมอบอยู่ในที่ไม่ห่าง ถามว่า ท่านผู้เจริญ ท่านเที่ยวไปในป่าทำไม? พรานตอบว่า เที่ยวหาฝูงเหี้ย.
กิ้งก่ากล่าวว่า ฉันรู้จักที่อาศัยของเหี้ยหลายร้อยตัว ท่านจงหาไฟและฟางมาเราจะนำท่านไปที่นั้น แล้วกิ้งก่าจึงสอนพรานว่า ท่านจงใส่ฟางตรงนี้แล้วจุดไฟ ทำให้เป็นควันแล้ววางกับดักล้อมไว้ พรานนั้นจึงออกไปคอยตีฝูงเหี้ยให้ตายแล้วเอากองไว้เป็นร้อยๆ ตัว
ครั้นบอกอย่างนี้แล้ว กิ้งก่าก็คิดว่า วันนี้เป็นได้เห็นหลังศัตรูพินาศ แล้วนอนผงกหัวอยู่ ณ ที่อาศัยของมัน
แม้นายพรานก็จัดการสุมไฟฟาง ควันเข้าไปในโพรง ฝูงเหี้ยพากันสำลักควัน ถูกมรณภัยคุกคาม ต่างรีบออกพากันหนีลนลาน พรานก็จ้องตีตัวที่ออกมาๆ ให้ตาย ที่รอดพ้นมือพรานไปได้ ก็ถูกฝูงหมากัด ความพินาศอย่างใหญ่หลวงเกิดแก่ฝูงเหี้ย.
พระโพธิสัตว์รู้ว่า เพราะอาศัยกิ้งก่าภัยจึงบังเกิดขึ้นแก่ตัวนี้แล้ว กล่าวว่า ขึ้นชื่อว่า การคลุกคลีกับคนชั่วคนพาลไม่พึงกระทำ ขึ้นชื่อว่า ประโยชน์ย่อมไม่มีเพราะอาศัยคนชั่ว ด้วยอำนาจของกิ้งก่าชั่วตัวเดียว ความพินาศจึงเกิดแก่ฝูงเหี้ยมีประมาณเป็นร้อย
ก่อนที่เหี้ยพระโพธิสัตว์จะหนีไปทางช่องลมที่ตนขุดไว้ จึงได้กล่าวคาถานี้ว่า :-
“ผู้คบคนชั่ว ย่อมไม่ได้ความสุขโดยส่วนเดียว เขาย่อมทำตนให้ถึงความพินาศ เหมือนอย่างตระกูลเหี้ยที่ยังให้ตนถึงความวอดวายเพราะไปคบกับกิ้งก่าพาลฉะนั้น” ดังนี้.
พระศาสดาทรงนำพระธรรมเทศนานี้มาแล้ว ทรงประชุมชาดกว่า
กิ้งก่าในครั้งนั้น ได้มาเป็น เทวทัต
บุตรพระโพธิสัตว์ชื่อโคธปิลลิกะผู้ไม่เชื่อโอวาท ได้มาเป็นภิกษุผู้คบหาฝ่ายผิด
ส่วนพญาเหี้ยได้มาเป็น เราตถาคต ฉะนี้แล.
อะเสวะนา จะ พาลานัง.
ไม่ควรคบคนพาล
ปัณฑิตานัญจะ เสวะนา
ควรคบบัณฑิต
เจริญธรรม

The Bodhisatta was born as a water monitor lizard king.

Godha Jataka
While residing at the Veluvana Monastery, the Buddha told a story of a monk associating with a traitorous monk. The Buddha preached this sermon, beginning with the Na pāpajanasaṃsevī verses.
In the past, when King Brahmadatta was ruling the Benares City, the Bodhisatta was born as a water monitor lizard. Living in a large burrow near the river bank, it grew up with hundreds of water monitor lizards as its followers.
The Bodhisatta’s son, Kodhapillika, became close friends with a chameleon. Kodhapillika teased it, hugged it, and climbed on it, thinking, “I will embrace this chameleon as my friend.” This intimacy was reported to the monitor lizard king. Thus, the king sent for his young son and said, “My son, your friendship with a chameleon is misplaced, for chameleons are of low birth. You should not be close to it. If your intimacy with it continues, calamity will befall the whole tribe of water monitor lizards. From now on, stay away from this chameleon.”
But Kodhapillika continued its intimacy with the chameleon. Again and again, the Bodhisatta spoke with its son but could not stop their intimacy. Foreseeing danger to the entire herd of water monitor lizards from the chameleon, the king of water monitor lizards had an outlet cut on one side of their burrow as an escape route when danger arose.
The son of the king of the monitor lizard grew larger, while the chameleon remained the same. Kodhapillika thought it would embrace the chameleon and kept plunging on it. When Kodhapillika plunged into the chameleon, the chameleon felt like being crushed by a mountain peak. When the chameleon was in trouble, it thought, “If this monitor lizard clings to me like this for a few more days, I will surely die.” Then, the chameleon resolved to cooperate with a hunter to wipe out this monitor lizard tribe.
One day in the dry season after rain, moths flew out of the termite mound. Water monitor lizards left their habitats and went to eat moths.
A monitor lizard hunter took a hoe and went into the forest with his pack of dogs to dig a monitor lizard burrow. The chameleon saw him and thought, “Today, my hope will be fulfilled.” So, it went to the hunter and laid down in a place not far away asking, “Sir, why are you wandering in the forest?” The hunter replied, “I’m catching water monitor lizards.”
The chameleon said, “Well, I know where hundreds of monitor lizards live. Get some fire and straws and I will take you there.” Then, the chameleon taught the hunter, “Put some straws here, light a fire, and smoke them out.” The hunter went out and beat the monitor lizards to death and piled them up in hundreds.
The chameleon thought, “Today I will see the calamity of my enemy.” Then, it lay down and nodded its head in its habitat.
The trapper set to work to smoke the water monitor lizards out. Fear for their lives drove the monitor lizards from their burrow. As they came out, the trapper knocked them on the head, and if he missed them, they fell prey to his dogs. So, there was great slaughter among the water monitor lizards.
Realizing that it was the chameleon’s doing, the Bodhisatta cried, “One should never make friends with the wicked. There isn’t any benefit from evil people. By the power of one evil chameleon, the herd of hundreds of water monitor lizards died.”
The Bodhisatta escaped by the outlet and uttered this stanza :
“Bad company never ends in good.
Like the tribe of water monitor lizards met their end due to the friendship with one evil chameleon.”
Having delivered this sermon, the Buddha, concluded this Jataka story :
The chameleon at that time became Devadatta.
The son of the Bodhisatta, Kodhapillika, that disobeyed its father’s teachings, became a monk associated with the wrong party.
And the king of the water monitor lizards became me, the Buddha.
Asevana ca palanam
Avoiding the wrong company.
Panditanan ca sevana
One should associate with the wise. Wishing you progress in the Dhamma practice.
