On February 19, 2022, a foreign news source reported that The Royal Canadian Mounted Police sent their police to remove “Freedom Convoy” demonstrators. The demonstrators protested for weeks in front of the Parliament to demand the elimination of the Covid-19 vaccination requirement.
The tension between protesters and the police increased. Police officers pointed their weapons towards protestors. Over 170 protesters were arrested, and their 46 vehicles were towed. The Canadian government invoked the Emergencies Act. The government was under the leadership of Mr. Justin Trudeau, prime minister, and leader of the Liberal Party, who is familiar with Mr. Thanathorn.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act to curtail funding to the demonstrators. Bank accounts of protest leaders and their supporters were frozen. It was the most decisive way to stop the demonstration. (Why don’t Thailand do the same?)
If this incident happened in Thailand, the three-finger salute protesters would condemn it as a human rights violation. Then, Amnesty International and the United Nations Human Rights Council would broadcast and revile it all over the world. Then, diplomats of democratic countries will give an interview to pressure the Thai government, as planned by the Three-Finger Salute protesters.
In September 2018, Mr. Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit was invited by Mr. Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, to attend the Global Progress Summit and share perspectives of Thailand’s politics. Mr. Trudeau encouraged Mr. Thanathorn’s founding of the Future Forward Party and wished him success in building democracy in Thailand (Not sure if it’s a democracy like in Canada?)
Thai media also praised Mr. Justin Trudeau for being an admirable democrat.
When the more violent protest removal took place, the Three Finger Salute protesters have not said a word.
If Mr. Thanathorn had become a prime minister, would have he done towards protesters violently like that in Canada?
Democracy for these people seems to be quite distorted?
