อธิบายคำว่า วาจาสุภาษิต หมายถึง สัจจะวาจา เป็นวาจาก่อให้เกิดสติ สมาธิ ปัญญา เป็นวาจาก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ เป็นวาจาที่ทำให้ผู้ฟัง นำไปประพฤติปฏิบัติตามได้ เป็นวาจาที่เป็นคุณแก่ผู้ฟัง เป็นวาจาที่เมื่อพูดออกไปแล้ว เปรียบประดุจดังแสงสว่างในที่มืด เป็นวาจาที่ทำให้สรรพสัตว์ได้เห็นถึงความจริงแท้อันประเสริฐ เป็นวาจาที่ทำให้ผู้ฟังเห็นเหตุแห่งทุกข์ทั้งปวง และเป็นวาจาที่ผู้ฟัง ฟังแล้วสามารถแก้ปัญหา พร้อมสามารถดับมูลเหตุแห่งทุกข์ได้จริง
๕ ลักษณะของวาจาที่เป็นสุภาษิต
๑. ต้องเป็นสัจจะวาจา
๒. ต้องเป็นวาจาสุภาพ
๓. เมื่อพูดแล้วต้องก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์แก่ผู้ฟัง
๔. ต้องพูดด้วยจิตเมตตา ปรารถนาให้ผู้ฟังนำไปเปลี่ยนแปลงนิสัย แก้ไขสิ่งที่ผิดพลาด
๕. ต้องพูดให้ถูกกาลเทศะ เหมาะสมควรแก่สถานที่ บุคคล ชุมชน ด้วยจิตเมตตา แม้คำพูดนั้นจะเป็นความจริง แต่หากไม่ถูกกาลเทศะ ไม่ถูกสถานที่ บุคคล ชุมชน ทั้งยังขาดจิตเมตตา มีความปรารถนาดีต่อผู้ฟังแล้ว วาจาเช่นนั้นก็หาได้ประโยชน์ไม่ เช่นนี้ก็ไม่ถือว่าเป็นวาจาสุภาษิต
๕ ลักษณะคำพูดที่เป็นวาจาทุภาษิต
๑. สรรเสริญบุคคลผู้ขาดศรัทธา
๒. ชื่นชมยินดีกับคนผู้ทุศีล
๓. กล่าวสรรเสริญคนพาลว่าประเสริฐ
๔. กล่าวชื่นชมบุคคลที่เห็นแก่ประโยชน์ตนเป็นใหญ่
๕. กล่าวยกยอคนโง่ ว่ามีสติปัญญา
ใครก็ตามที่พูดถึงเหตุทุภาษิตใน ๕ ประการ ต้องถอยห่างจากมาให้ไกลๆ
อานิสงฆ์ ๕ ประการของผู้มีวาจาสุภาษิต
๑. เป็นผู้มีเสน่ห์ในหมู่ชน
๒. เจริญในโลกทั้ง ๒
๓. มีวาจาสิทธิ์ พูดเช่นไร ทำเช่นนั้น ทำเช่นไรคิดเช่นนั้น
๔. เป็นผู้มีวาสนา ที่จะได้ยินได้ฟังแต่ความจริง
๕. ไม่ตกต่ำในโลกไหนๆ
เอตัมมังคะ ละมุตตะมัง ข้อนี้เป็นมงคลอันสูงสุด

Being a person of right speech

Right speech means any speech which results in consciousness, concentration, wisdom, and usefulness. Those who listen such speech can follow. Such speech is beneficial for listeners. Such speech is like light in darkness and enable all living creatures to realize of noble truths. Such speech enables listeners to see causes of all sufferings and find solutions to extinguish causes of all suffering.
Five characteristics of right speech
1. It must be genuine truth.
2. It mut be polite.
3. It is useful for listeners
4. It must be spoken with kindness and intention for listeners to change their habits and correct mistakes.
5. It must be spoken with kind intention at the right time, suitable for a particular place, person, and society. Though such speech is truth, but if it is not spoken at the right time for a particular place, person, and society, and is lack of good intention towards listeners, such speech is not regarded as right speech.
Five characteristics of wrong speech
1. It praises faithless people.
2. It appreciates immoral people.
3. It praises rascals to be noble.
4. It praises selfish people
5. It flatters foolish people to have wisdom.
We shall stay away from people with such five characteristics of wrong speech.
Five good results of being a person with right speech.
1. Being charismatic among people
2. Being prosperous in both hypothetical world and ultimate world.
3. One’s speech is sacred. One does what he has said. One’s actions correlate to one’s thoughts.
4. Such person is auspicious to hear only truths.
5. Such person will not become inferior in whichever world.
This is the most auspicious factor in one’s life.
