พอเซ็นยินยอมให้คุณหมอรักษาแล้ว หมอจึงส่ง พุทธะอิสระ ให้ไปขึ้นชั้น ๔ ซึ่งเป็นชั้นอายุกรรม ขณะนั้นเห็นบรรดาผู้ช่วยพยาบาลทั้งแก่ทั้งหนุ่ม ต่างช่วยกันกระวีกระวาดจัดเตียงนอนคนไข้ ให้อยู่ใกล้กับประตูทางเข้าออก พร้อมปูเตียง ผ้าห่ม หมอน และตามด้วยถังออกซิเจน
เมื่อทุกอย่างตระเตรียมเรียบร้อย เจ้าหน้าที่พยาบาลจึงมาเรียกให้ฉันที่นั่งรออยู่หน้าห้อง ให้เข้าไปนอนพักให้ออกซิเจน พร้อมตรวจวัดความดัน และออกซิเจนในเลือด เพื่อบันทึกประวัติคนไข้ประจำห้องอายุรกรรม
คืนแรกในโรงพยาบาลราชทัณฑ์ ฉันได้รับการต้อนรับจากเพื่อนๆ นักโทษที่เป็นผู้ป่วยอย่างอบอุ่น บ้างก็นำผ้าขนหนู ผ้าเช็ดหน้ามาให้ บ้างก็นำยาสีฟัน แปรงสีฟัน แก้วน้ำ สบู่ มาให้เพราะรู้ว่าฉันมาแต่ตัว
บางคนก็นำเอานมกล่อง และน้ำขวดมาให้
คุยไปคุยมา จึงได้ความว่า คนพวกนี้เคยรู้จักกับป๊อปคอร์น ที่เคยเข้ามานอนในอาคารอายุรเวช พวกเขาได้รับฟังจากปากป๊อปคอร์นว่า
ตั้งแต่ป๊อปคอร์นติดคุก พุทธะอิสระ ไม่เคยทอดทิ้งเขาเลย แม้จะไม่เคยรู้จักมาก่อน แค่เขามีบุญคุณมาช่วยชีวิต ป้องกันไม่ให้พวกโกตี๋ บุกเข้ามาเอาชีวิต พุทธะอิสระ ทุกวันนี้ พุทธะอิสระ ยังส่งเงินช่วยเหลือครอบครัวเขาทุกเดือนๆ ละ ๑๕,๐๐๐ บาท มาเป็นเวลา ๗ ปีกว่าแล้ว
เรื่องเหล่านี้ พวกนักโทษที่อยู่ในอาคารอายุรเวช ทุกคนต่างรับรู้ได้ เมื่อ พุทธะอิสระ เข้ามาอยู่ในอาคารนี้ พวกเขาจึงได้ให้การต้อนรับขับสู้เป็นอย่างดี
เมื่อได้มีโอกาสพูดคุยกัน จึงได้รับรู้ว่า หลายคนที่อยู่ในห้องนี้ เป็นนักสู้เสื้อแดง ที่ต้องคดีในการชุมนุมมาหลายปี และก็มีหลายคนใหม่ๆ ก็มีคนมาส่งข้าว ส่งน้ำ ส่งเงิน แต่พออยู่ไปได้ปีเศษๆ ก็หายจ้อย ทิ้งพวกเขาให้ต้องติดคุกแบบอนาถา มีแต่ญาติที่อยู่อย่างลำบากเท่านั้นที่มาเยี่ยม
พอพวกเขารู้ว่า พุทธะอิสระ ไม่เคยทอดทิ้งผู้มีคุณ พวกเขาจึงได้ชื่นชม พร้อมเข้ามาพูดคุยปรับทุกข์ให้ฟัง
ขณะพูดคุย ทำให้ฉันได้รับรู้ว่า หลายคนที่ต้องโทษ ล้วนได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณจากสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และพระเจ้าลูกเธอ เสด็จมาเยือนถึงในโรงพยาบาล หลังจากทรงได้มีโอกาสตรัสถามสารทุกข์สุกดิบแก่บรรดานักโทษ
จึงทรงทราบปัญหาว่า หลังจากที่บรรดานักโทษพ้นโทษไปแล้ว จะไม่มีงานทำ ไม่มีอาชีพ เพราะไม่มีนายจ้างที่ไหน อยากจะได้คนที่มีประวัติติดคุก ติดตาราง อีกทั้งเข้าสังคมก็ไม่ค่อยได้
ต่อมาพระเจ้าอยู่หัว จึงทรงมีพระราชกระแสรับสั่ง ให้กรมราชทัณฑ์จัดอบรมหลักสูตรเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง โคก หนอง นา โมเดลให้แก่นักโทษ ที่ต้องการประกอบอาชีพเกษตรกร และหากใครไม่มีที่ดิน ก็สามารถลงทะเบียนขอรับที่ดินทำกินได้ฟรีๆ โดยมีการอนุมัติที่ราชพัสดุ แบ่งปันให้ประชาชนที่ไม่มีที่ทำกินได้อยู่อาศัยและทำกิน แต่กรรมสิทธิ์ยังเป็นของราชพัสดุอยู่
อีกทั้งในทุกปี ยังทรงพระราชทานอภัยโทษ ให้แก่นักโทษชั้นเยี่ยม ชั้นดี ปีๆ หนึ่งหลายหมื่นคน
ด้วยพระมหากรุณาอันล้นพ้นเหล่านี้ จึงทำให้พวกนักโทษทุกคน ต่างรักและเทิดทูนสถาบันยิ่ง อีกทั้งพวกเขายังถาม พุทธะอิสระ ว่า เมื่อไหร่ ทอน บุตร ช่อ จะเข้ามาในคุก พวกเขาเตรียมจัดหนักไว้ให้เป็นของขวัญ
พุทธะอิสระ จึงแจ้งว่า คงอีกไม่นอนเกินรอ…

Way of Brave Man (Chapter 7)

After signing my name to accept the hospital’s treatment, doctor sent me to the internal medicine department on the 4th floor. Then, both old and young nursing assistants enthusiastically moved a patient bed closer to the door, made the bed, and laid down blanket and pillow, followed by an oxygen tank.
I was sitting and waiting in front of the room. Once ready, a nursing officer called me to rest and get oxygen in the room. Then, she checked my blood pressure and oxyhemoglobin and recorded them in the patient record of internal medicine room.
The first night in the prison hospital, I received a warm welcome from fellow prisoners. Some brought me a towel, a handkerchief, toothpaste, toothbrush, glass, soap bar because they knew that I did not have anything. Some brought me carton milk and bottled water.
After talking to them, I learned that these people know Popcorn while his staying in the Ayurveda Building.
They heard from Popcorn that since Popcorn’s imprisonment, Buddha Isara has never abandoned him. Despite not knowing each other before, Popcorn helped protect Buddha Isara from Koti’s attempt to kill Buddha Isara. Buddha Isara has sent 15,000 Baht to help his family every month for over seven years.
Prisoners in the Ayurveda Building knew about this. So, when Buddha Isara came to stay in this building, they gave me a hospitable welcome.
After talking to them, I learned that several of them were red-shirt fighters who were charged resulting from their protests for years. In the beginning, someone came to give them meals, water, and money. However, after over a year, they disappeared and leaving them imprisoned in difficulty. Some only have poor relatives who also live a difficult life, visiting them.
When they knew that Buddha Isara has never abandoned benevolent people, they admired and came to talk and tell their stories.
During our conversation, I learned that several prisoners received help, after the King and Princess Bajrakitiyabha when their royal visit to the prison hospital and asked prisoners about their lives in prison.
The King and the Princess learned from prisoners that after getting released, they could not find jobs because no employer wanted to hire people with criminal records. And they also could not get along with the society.
Later, the King had the Department of Corrections organize a training “Khok Nong Na Model Self Sufficiency Economy” to prisoners who wish to become farmers. For prisoners who do not have land, they may register to request for state property. Once approved by the Treasury Department, they can do plantation, but the land is still state property.
Every year, the King also grants royal pardon to ten thousands of well-behaved prisoners.
Owing to His Majesty’s utmost benevolence, all prisoners love and adore the monarchy very much. They also asked Buddha Isara when Thorn, Butr, and Chor will be imprisoned. They have prepared hard lessons for them as gifts.
