ตอนที่แล้วจบลงตรงที่ พลเรือโท (พลเรือจัตวาในเวลานั้น) พระยาชลยุทธโยธินทร์ ควบคุมเรือพระที่นั่งมหาจักรี ไล่ตามเรือรบฝรั่งเศสทั้งสองลำมาติดๆ ตามลำแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา พร้อมตัดสินใจว่าจะใช้เรือมหาจักรีพุ่งชนพลีชีพไปพร้อมๆ กับเรือรบของข้าศึก แต่กลับถูกพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงทัดทานไว้
ด้วยทรงเห็นว่า แม้สยามจะยอมพลีชีพใช้เรือพุ่งชนข้าศึก ก็มิอาจเอาชนะได้ จึงไม่ควรให้ไพร่พลต้องมาสูญเสียเช่นนั้น
ด้วยเหตุผลนี้ ทำเอาพระยาชลยุทธโยธินทร์ ผู้บัญชาการทหารเรือชาวเดนมาร์ก ถึงกับกลั้นน้ำตาเอาไว้ไม่ได้ ด้วยความอัดอั้นคับแค้นที่ไม่สามารถนำชัยชนะมาสู่สยามได้
แต่การปะทะกันที่ปากน้ำเจ้าพระยา ทำให้ฝรั่งเศสตายไป ๓ นาย บาดเจ็บ ๓ นาย ส่วนกำลังรบของสยามนั้นตายไป ๘ นาย บาดเจ็บ ๔๐ นาย
ในเวลาต่อมาเรือรบทั้งสองลำของฝรั่งเศส ก็แล่นเข้ามาตามลำน้ำเจ้าพระยาจนถึงท่าน้ำหน้าสถานทูตฝรั่งเศสในกรุงเทพฯ โดยมีเรือรบมหาจักรีของสยามจอดคุมเชิงอยู่ห่างๆ
พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว จึงทรงเครื่องจอมทัพพร้อมรบ เสด็จออกไปสมทบกับข้าราชบริพาร และพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ในพระบรมมหาราชวัง
ทรงตัดสินพระทัยอย่างแน่วแน่ว่า จะต้องปกป้องแผ่นดินสยามเอาไว้ให้ได้ด้วยพระชนม์ชีพของพระองค์เอง
ลุจนถึงวันที่ ๒๐ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.๒๔๓๖ เอกอัครราชทูตฝรั่งเศส นายโอกุสต์ ปาวี ได้ยื่นคำขาด ๖ ข้อ ส่งสาส์นมาบังคับสมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาเทวะวงศ์วโรปการ เสนาบดีกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ โดยมี ๒ ใน ๖ ข้อ ที่สร้างความโทมนัสอย่างแสนสาหัส ให้แก่สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว

The last chapter ended when Vice Admiral (at that time, a commodore) Phraya Chonlayutthayothin took control of the Maha Chakri Warship, following two French warships closely, along the Chao Phraya River. He decided to sacrifice his life by having the Maha Chakri Warship hit the enemy warship but was opposed by the King. The King thought that though Siam could sacrifice by having its ship colliding with the enemy’s ship, Siam still could not win. Therefore, it was not worthwhile losing soldiers’ lives.
Consequently, in distress, Phraya Chonlayutthayothin could not hold back the tears and cried that he could not make Siam win the war.
The battle at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River made 3 French dead and 3 injured, whereas 8 Siamese dead and 40 injured.
Later, the two French warships sailed along the Chao Phraya River till they arrived at the pier in front of the French Embassy in Bangkok. The Maha Chakri Warship was parked watchfully not far from the French ships.
His Majesty King Chulalongkorn then wore a full-body armor, as supreme commander, and went to meet the royal family members and vassals at the grand palace.
The King was determined to protect Siam with his own life.
On July 20, 1893, Auguste Jean-Marie Pavie, the French Charge d’Affaires, communicated the first formal ultimatum with six requirements to Prince Devawongse Varopakarn, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Siam. Two of the six requirements caused deep sorrow to the King.
