ลูกรัก เจ้าจักสำคัญความนี้เป็นไฉน ? (ตอนที่ ๙)

มหานรกขุมใหญ่สุดทั้ง ๘ ขุม เราท่านทั้งหลายได้ทำความรู้จักกันไปในเบื้องต้นแล้ว
ครานี้ลูกก็ลองมาทำความรู้จักขุมนรกบริวารของมหานรกขุมแรกนั้นคือ สัญชีวมหานรกกันดูบ้าง ซึ่งมีนรกบริวารรายล้อมอยู่โดยรอบอยู่ทั้ง ๔ ทิศ อีก ๑๖ ขุม โดยขุมที่ ๑ มีชื่อว่า เวตรณีนรก หมายถึง แม่น้ำเวตรณีที่ว่ายข้ามได้ยากยิ่ง เหตุเพราะเป็นแม่น้ำกรดที่มีฤทธิ์กัดกร่อนเลือดเนื้อและกระดูกโดยเฉพาะ ทั้งยังมีหมอกควันที่เกิดจากไอพิษของน้ำกรดลอยอยู่เหนือน้ำอย่างหนาแน่น จนไม่สามารถมองเห็นกันและกันได้
หมู่สัตว์ทั้งหลายเมื่อเห็นทะเลน้ำกรดเดือดจนควันพวยพุ่งกลายเป็นหมอกหนาทึบเช่นนั้นก็มิกล้าจะเข้าไปใกล้แม่น้ำกรดนั้น
เมื่อนายนิรยบาลเห็นเช่นนั้น จึงใช้ไม้คันเบ็ดที่เป็นเหล็กมีปลายแหลมไล่หวด ไล่ตี ทิ่มแทงบังคับให้หมู่สัตว์เหล่านั้นกระโดดลงไปในทะเลน้ำกรดอันร้อนแรง
สัตว์เหล่านั้นเมื่อตกลงไปในทะเลน้ำกรดนั้น ก็ส่งเสียงร้องคร่ำครวญด้วยความเจ็บปวดจากการถูกน้ำกรดกัด และพยายามดิ้นรนกระเสือกกระสนออกแรงว่าย เพื่อจักเข้าสู่ฝั่ง แต่ก็มองไม่เห็นฝั่งว่าอยู่ในทิศใด ขณะที่น้ำกรดก็กัดกร่อนเอาเนื้อหนังเอ็นและกระดูกจนหลุดลุ่ยออกมาเป็นชิ้นๆ แล้วก็ละลายหายไปกับทะเลน้ำกรด
กาลต่อมาจึงบังเกิดลมและคลื่นใหญ่ซัดสาดพัดเอาเศษชิ้นส่วนของร่างกายหมู่สัตว์เหล่านั้นขึ้นฝั่งเมื่อกระทบกับพื้นดินสัตว์นั้นก็พลิกฟื้นคืนชีพขึ้นมา
นายนิรยบาลเห็นเช่นนั้นก็จะตรงเข้ารุกไล่ตี ทิ่มแทงด้วยคันเบ็ดเหล็กแหลม บังคับให้กระโดดลงไปในทะเลน้ำกรดอีก
สภาพของหมู่สัตว์เหล่านั้นจักเป็นอยู่เช่นนี้จนกว่าจะหมดกรรม
ถามว่า :
แล้วหมู่สัตว์ที่ตกนรกทะเลกรดขุมนี้ทำกรรมอะไรไว้
ตอบว่า :
ด้วยเพราะขณะที่สัตว์ได้เกิดเป็นมนุษย์หรือดิรัจฉาน หรือสัตว์อื่นใด เมื่อเกิดมาแล้วใช้กำลังกาย วาจา ข่มเหง กลั่นแกล้ง รังแก ทำร้าย แก่ผู้ที่อ่อนแออย่างไม่เป็นธรรม เช่นนี้จึงต้องได้รับทัณฑ์กรรมให้ไปเวียนว่ายอยู่ในทะเลน้ำกรดกัดกร่อนเลือด เนื้อ กระดูก จนกว่าจะหมดกรรม
เวตรณีนรกขุมนี้ไม่มีวันเวลากำหนด จะพ้นจากนรกขุมนี้ได้ก็ต่อเมื่อหมดกรรมชั่วผิดบาปที่กระทำต่อผู้ที่อ่อนแอกว่าเท่านั้น
คาถาที่สามารถเอาชนะนรกขุมนี้ได้ คือ เมตตา กรุณา มุทิตา และการวางเฉย (อุเบกขา) จึงจักสามารถพ้นจากการครอบงำของเวตรณีนรกขุมนี้ได้

We have already learned about the eight great hells.
This time, let us explore the satellite hells surrounding the first major hell, Sanjiva Hell. Sixteen smaller hells encircle Sanjiva Hell in all four directions.
The first of these is Vetarani Hell, named after the Vetarani River, which is extremely difficult to cross. This river is filled with acid that corrodes blood, flesh, and bone. The air above it is thick with toxic vapors, so dense that no one can see another.
When the beings in this realm behold the vast sea of boiling acid shrouded in mist, they do not dare to approach it. Seeing this, the hell wardens strike and pierce them with sharp metal fishing rods, forcing them to leap into the burning waters.
As they fall into the sea of acid, the beings cry out in agony, struggling to swim toward the shore. Yet no shore can be seen in any direction. The acid continues to eat away at their flesh, tendons, and bones until their bodies dissolve completely into the corrosive sea.
Then, fierce winds and waves rise, sweeping the fragments of their bodies back to shore. The moment their bodies touch the land, they are revived—only for the wardens to rush forward once again, stabbing and driving them back into the acid.
Thus, the beings remain in this endless cycle until their karma is fully exhausted.
Question: What karma did the beings in this acidic sea hell commit?
Answer: In their past lives as humans, animals, or other beings, they used their physical and verbal power to oppress, torment, bully, and harm the weak. Because of this, they are now punished by being cast into the sea of acid, where their blood, flesh, and bones are corroded until their karma is spent.
The Vetarani Hell has no fixed duration. Release is possible only when the evil karma of harming the weak has been entirely exhausted. The mantras that can overcome this hell are those of loving-kindness, compassion, rejoicing in the happiness and merits of others, and equanimity. By cultivating these virtues, one may be safe from the Vetarani Hell.
